@Patricia - Yes, Trieste is near here and I heard wonders about it, but I haven' visited yet.

@Vini - Yes, you are right, hostels are not for everyone, but are very well suited for some audiences, specially people travelling alone. I am travelling with my wife, but for a few more Euros we booked a room for two, with even a double bed, and it is being a great choice, much cheaper than a hotel and cousy and private enought for the first days.

No way you are going to Barcelona next, come over here and visit us.

Hi O´Connors,

I am very glad to hear you arrived well in Trento and had the chance to enjoy Milan in your way ;-) While reading your post I decided to share a few points regarding staying in hostels when our requirements have been raised to a certain threshold, no matter reasons made you do it.

Indeed HI usually has reasonable standards, although you may get disappointed some times, and it’s a shame I haven’t used this Nordic network (yet), but my feeling are that some hostels have been focused on profiles like yours (and mine!) and so they provide an accommodation I would say between an usual hostel and a hotel, they are not as expensive as a hotel, full of those standardized rooms with its very individual atmosphere where no one actually expects to meet no one else, including a far from funny staff. Instead they offer cosy and tidy up rooms at fair prices (30 to 40 € per person per night), nice atmosphere and a good balance between privacy and opportunity to meet new people during your stay. This is what I found at St. Christopher’s Inns in Berlin and expect to see shortly at Hostal Goya in Barcelona.

I came to know them by hostel and travel deals comparison websites. The rating figures available in the Hostel World website are very reliable and so far I haven’t had any surprises with my credit card after using their booking system some times, recommended! Another very useful website to compare several travel services is the Travel Supermarket, it is worthy checking it before booking flights or accommodation anywhere else.

I wish you all the best in Italy and hope to see you soon there or in London!!

Cheers,
